What to Expect and How to Manage Recovery

Pain at Injection Sites:

  • Once the local anaesthetic wears off, the needle insertion sites may feel uncomfortable for a few days.
  • This usually improves with simple pain relief, such as Paracetamol or anti-inflammatory medications (e.g., Ibuprofen, if safe for you).

Temporary Numbness (Caudal Epidural Patients):

  • Some patients experience reduced sensation in the pelvic floor for about 6 hours post-procedure.
  • To prevent difficulty with urination or bowel movements, sit on the toilet:
  • Before leaving the hospital
  • As soon as you get home
  • Every few hours afterward

Leg Numbness or Weakness:

  • Temporary leg numbness or weakness may last for a few hours post-procedure.
  • For the first 12 hours, ensure someone assists you when moving, including getting out of a chair or standing up from the toilet.
  • Do not drive if you experience leg weakness or numbness.
  • Seek urgent medical attention at the nearest Emergency Department if you suddenly experience:
  • Profound numbness
  • Inability to move your leg

Pain Relief Timeline:

  • This procedure does not provide immediate pain relief.
  • Monitor your pain levels over the next few weeks for signs of improvement.

Returning to Normal Activities:

  • Resume normal activities 48 hours after the procedure or when you feel ready.
  • Your doctor may provide specific activity modifications if necessary.

Follow-Up Appointments:

  • Our clinic will contact you to schedule a follow-up appointment, typically 2 to 4 weeks post-procedure.
  • Additional injections may be considered based on your response to treatment.

When to Seek Medical Assistance

Contact our clinic or seek immediate medical help if you experience:

  • High fever (a possible sign of infection)
  • Severe, worsening pain that does not improve with painkillers
